The reality of entrepreneurship is that you often cannot predict or control the outcome of your venture. The anxiety of the unknown can be overwhelming, but for one entrepreneur the unexpected support system that emerged through their journey helped them navigate the fear of the unknown.
Bilal, founder and CEO of Cinemora, faced this moment during his first large-scale Canada Day event. Cinemora specializes in transforming backyards into cinemas, complete with large screens, quality sound, ambient lighting, fresh popcorn, cotton candy, and comfortable beanbag seating. Each event brings families and friends together to enjoy films or live sports under the stars.
The turnout was much larger than Bilal had expected. He states, “I was nervous and unsure of how things would go, but my friends showed up to help me through it and made sure the event was a success.”
Bilal’s passion for film and entrepreneurship ignited his business, but a deeper motivation drove him: independence. “There’s a quote I live by: ‘You either take the risk or work for someone who did.’ That mindset pushed me to take initiative and build something of my own.”
That passion manifested as Cinemora, but evolved into something more – a business that fosters community and connection.
Bilal was a participant of the Summer Company Program in Mississauga and grant recipient, which helped him kickstart Cinemora. “The real benefit came from the mentorship, structure, and support the program provided. It helped me develop confidence, discipline, and problem-solving skills that go far beyond business. The experience truly shaped who I am today and is something I’ll always value.”
Bilal has now set his sights on expanding his operations in 2026 including hiring employees to manage same-day bookings more efficiently. Allowing him to take on more events while maintaining high quality and customer satisfaction.
If there is anything Bilal has learned as an entrepreneur it is that most people overestimate what they can do in a month and underestimate what they can achieve in a year. Bilal’s advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is to start now and don’t be afraid to start small. Along the way you will find a community you can lean on.
“The most impactful lesson I’ve learned is to value the people who stand by you during difficult times. Whether it’s your family, mentors, or close friends, you truly see who’s in your corner when things get challenging.” The Summer Company program offers students in Ontario 15-29 years free training, mentorship and a grant up to $3,000 to assist them launch and run a business during the summer. The program is offered throughout Ontario and is funded by the Province of Ontario.
